The four cherubim stand in the Presence of God who “dwellest between the Cherubim” (Benedictus es, Domine, BCP p. 11). They surround the throne of the Lamb in the heavenly worship of Revelation 4 and God’s throne Chariot in Ezekiel 1. In the temple, they surrounded the Mercy Seat where atonement is made between God and Man (Exodus 25:18-22; Hebrews 9:3-15)—“and there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim…” And finally, they surround the Tree of Life after the Fall, standing guard with a flaming sword in the east end of the garden of Eden, where God had dwelt with Man, keeping the way of the Tree of Life (Genesis 3:22-24). In Christ, these guardian cherubim become the proclaiming Gospels, ceaselessly calling the Church to communion with God.
